Palestine: Some History-Why Palestinians Deserve A State Of Their Own

This began again as a reply to a comment on ablog I frequent. The discussion has been long and sometimes bloody. Because of the question of Statehood for Palestine, I thought I would post this just in case you might be confused about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and their claims to the land.

As to
your statement that, and I quote, “The
Jewish/Christian faith has been the roots of Israel for thousands, not 1000,
but many thousands of years. It has never been Arab. The Arabs have tried many
times to kill, relocate and deprive the Jewish community, but that land has NO Arab
history, only Jewish and Christian. There is NO Palestinian history. NONE. Look
it up! Palestine is a mix of many different countries influences. “

–The
indigenous people of Palestine are descended from the people of the southern
part of what used to be called the “Levant” This ancient area covers all of the
land between the Mediterranean and the Syrian Desert and from the Taurus
Mountains in the North to the edge of the Sinai in the South. If you look at a
current map of the area, you can see that it covered what are now the nations
of, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and because
the boundaries varied over time sometimes Turkey and Iraq.

These
people were predominantly Christians and Jews but when the Moslems invaded in
the 7th century A.D. these people became over time a completely Arab
culture speaking Arabic. Of course there has always been a significant Bedouin
population as well and these Bedouins are direct descendants of the people of
the Arabian Peninsula.

So,
these Palestinian people are descended from the same people who inhabited
Palestine or Canaan since the days of the Ancient Kingdom of Israel. These were
Jews, Hittites, Philistines, and others whose names escape me. That kingdom
ended in 63 BC when Rome conquered Jerusalem. The people of the area continued
to live right next to the Jews on all sides other than the East where lies the Mediterranean.
The Romans destroyed Jerusalem and its Temple finally in 70 AD at the time of
The Great Jewish Revolt. Although Jews had been leaving Palestine since the
first destruction of the temple , the second destruction and the persecution by
the Romans after along with the Bar Kokhba’s revolt in 135
AD and the resultant persecutions which included the wholesale trading of Jews
as slaves further contributed to the Diaspora (The spreading of the Jews throughout
the known world.) and what would become an almost total abandonment of
Palestine by the Jews

From
that time in about 140 AD until the late 1880’s there remained several small
communities of Orthodox Jews in Palestine; mostly in Jerusalem and the other
cities but they were small in number and neither having nor desiring control of
any part of Palestine being satisfied to live in the Holy Land and at peace
with their neighbors, the descendants of the people who had lived there since
the beginning of history.

In
the early 7th Century AD, the prophet Mohammed died and by the late
7th century Islam was spreading across the world. When it conquered
Palestine, the population, with the exception of those small Jewish communities
embraced Islam and developed an entirely Arabic culture and spoke the Arabic
language and continued to live in Palestine and constituted the vast majority
of the population.

Although
Palestine has been occupied by several empires including the Roman, Byzantine, Umayyad, Fatimid, Crusader, Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman, the predominant
native population has remained the same Palestinian Arabs.

So, let’s
recap. The Jews were almost all gone from Palestine by say, 150AD and it wasn’t
until circa 1880AD that they began to trickle back in. 1700 years of
Palestinian Arab inhabitance with no more than a token Jewish presence.

In
the late 1800’s Jews began to slowly migrate down from Europe and Asia back to Palestine.

During
this period the small Jewish population who were mostly welcomed by the Arabs started
the Kibbutz system and again mostly lived in peace right beside their Arab
neighbors. There were incidents of Jews and Arabs clashing but the overall mood
was peaceful with some cases of Arabs and Jews co-operating to improve the land
and living conditions.

At
the end of WWII the Jewish population was only 33% of the total population of
Palestine.

The
other 67% consisted of Bedouin Arabs and the culturally Arab Palestinians.

When
the idea of Palestinian Nationalism was first conceived is a matter of some
debate. Some scholars think 1834 was the beginning of it. But definitely before
the end of the Ottoman Empire in 1923.

So,
1700 years the Palestinian Arabs lived in Palestine without so much as a
whisper from the Jews.

So
let’s take a look again at your claims:

The Jewish/Christian faith has been the roots of
Israel for thousands, not 1000, but many thousands of years.
Not so bad.
The Jews were there for approximately 1400-1700 years prior to abandoning it
and being driven out, both.

It has
never been Arab.
OOOOH not so good. It has been an Arab culture for
approximately1700 years

The Arabs have tried many times to kill, relocate
and deprive the Jewish community
. Not until after the creation of the State of
Israel in 1948 which took large areas of the land they had held for 1700 years.

That land has NO Arab history, only Jewish and
Christian
. Again wrong

There is NO Palestinian history. NONE. Look it
up!
Now this is a truly ridiculous claim as can be seen from my brief
history. Just so you know, I have studied the area of Palestine and the history
of it for over 35 years and have kept up fairly well with developments. I have
also spent some time studying the Hebrew and Christian bible. I don’t claim to
be an in depth expert but you’re not going to fool me with simple lies. I
suspect you have read by profile etc. so you should be aware that although I
possess no college degree I am relatively well read. So, you look it up.

Palestine is a mix of many different countries
influences.
This is true but not in the way you want to suggest. The Palestinians
are descended from all of the ancient peoples of Palestine but that blending
was long over by the time of the Roman occupation and for who knows how long
before. It began shortly after the Jews first came to Canaan so between say
1600 BC and 63BC the various people had already blended into the people that we
know as the Palestinian People or Arabs.

This
is what I know about the Palestinian people and if you need more I am sure that
with some research to aid my memory I can supply more.

So
please don’t try coming here with your false history.

Oh Yeh. Just so you know what’s really up with the people of
Israel:

In February 2008 a Haaretz
poll indicated that 64% of Israelis favor their government holding direct talks
with Hamas in Gaza about a cease-fire and the release of captives.[349]

Just
in case you have decided that I am anti-Israel. I’m not. I’m pro-Israel. But
I’m pro-Palestinian too.

It’s
not about the security of Israel.

It’s
about the legitimate claim and the right to self determination of a people in
their own land.

Sorry
but those are the facts. Israel has every right to defend itself, but not by
denying Statehood to the Palestinian people.

Liked your response. However, in the interest of full disclosure it must be said that Palestine has never been a country. In modern times, the name Palestine refers to a territory of the United Kingdom (Britain) which was in use after World War I and the break-up of the Ottoman Empire (the area known as Palestine had been part of the Ottoman Empire dating back to the 16th century). When the Ottoman Empire was broken up, the French and the British took a magic marker to the map of the Middle East and produced the likes of Syria, Iraq and Trans-Jordan, which would subsequently be further broken up into Jordan and Israel. In that process, the Palestinians and the Kurds were disenfranchised. Interestingly enough, there has never been a hue and cry for a Kurd homeland even though they have a bigger population than the Palestinians. Unfortunately for the Palestinians, Trans-Jordan was ceded to the Hashemites who are a minority sect with roots in Saudi Arabia. Even today, Palestinians make up a vast majority of Jordanians but the Hashemites still rule. The area called The West Bank, which has been the topic of a Palestinian homeland, is an area that was part of Jordan, but lost to Israel as a result of the 1967 Six Day War.

      chicagoja,

Excellent point that I may not have made clear. It has been sometime since I wrote this piece but I hope I didn’t suggest that Palestine was or had ever been an actual nation; rather that the people who have inhabited the region for many centuries have as much right to an actual homeland as the Jews who virtually deserted the region and then suddenly (in the scope of time) returned to reclaim it and dominate the lives of it’s inhabitants.
Thanks for clarifying that point if I missed it.

Look you can go back and back and depending on your point of view (or whoever you quote) come to the part you want to in history to make your point , but the fact’s are that the Jews were brought into a land that was not theirs, and they proceeded to empty homes and land of the people who were there at that time,(and who never evicted or ethnically cleansed anyone for their land) and have since set out to steal and take over the rest of their land, that is the fact’s that matter most.

I came to visit your blog after reading the comments you left on my recent post. – I had read about the history of Palestine but was left with questions so your post has filled in many of the blanks. (What I’d read on my own did leave me with the belief that they were descended from the people of Canaan.) It’s a history I don’t think most people in the U.S. are aware of. I never hear anything about the factual history on news programs. I recall the Washington press reporter Helen Thomas speaking out for Palestine “once” and said the Israelis should leave. Everyone jumped on her comments. She was ridiculed so badly, she resigned shortly thereafter. (You may remember that.) These people all consider themselves reporters and they just totally suppressed her truth, they just shut her down. She was an elderly woman and I thought it was a disgraceful scene. I wondered at the time if any of them, all of whom were younger than her, even knew the history. Or, what do you think, is it just not reported on? Why? Would reporters be “blacklisted”? How is it so many mainstream reporters don’t write about the truth of this? Does the U.S., Britain, etc. (under any president because this goes back decades) not want people to know the truth? Because they value a democratic government in that region so they want the US people to support Israel? Because politicians want the vote of the Jewish people in U.S. elections? – I know you can’t hear my voice and are just reading my words so let me state that I’m not asking these questions sarcastically. I ask because I’m interested in that region and would love to visit one day. – It was also my understanding that basically the United Nations pretty much just took the land from Palestine and gave it to Israel like 50 years ago. Yes? – I saw in the news that Helen Thomas passed away this week. I was proud of her courage. We are supposed to have freedom of the press but a couple of unhappy comments I’ve heard from news anchors over the past couple years has made me think that the tone of what gets reported has to be in line with the politics of the station owners. And I’m not referring to cable news, but “mainstream” news.

I apologize for taking so long to respond.

“Or, what do you think, is it just not reported on?” I’m not sure of the details but there is something that suppresses anything pro-Palestinian and twists things to make Israel appear blameless. It is almost certainly bigger than the US government. Some say it is the Rothschild international banking group who are Zionist leaders and wield the power and influence to fund and authorize these vast propaganda campaigns and continual monitoring of events etc. I am a believer in the New World Order conspiracy theory which ties into the Rothschild theory but I can’t prove anything.

“Why? Would reporters be “blacklisted”? How is it so many mainstream reporters don’t write about the truth of this?” That is the million dollar question; isn’t it? How is it possible that so many supposedly honorable members of the press who so pride themselves on being truth tellers and seekers; consistently fail to report the truth about an act of genocide that rivals any we have seen in Europe.

“Does the U.S., Britain, etc. (under any president because this goes back decades) not want people to know the truth?” I would say they do not wish us to know the truth. It doesn’t matter what Party is in power either. Both parties are privy to whatever secret Israel holds over them or whatever Corporate pressure is being applied to keep even The Media in line. Lies, Lies, Lies. Never admit the truth; no matter what. Hmm. Must be some heavy hitters.

“Because they value a democratic government in that region so they want the US people to support Israel?” If only their reasons were so noble.

Because politicians want the vote of the Jewish people in U.S. elections? True but I doubt that is enough to exert the pressure we are talking about.

“I know you can’t hear my voice and are just reading my words so let me state that I’m not asking these questions sarcastically. I ask because I’m interested in that region and would love to visit one day.” It never occurred to me that you were anything but sincere. I also would love to see that area but I don’t think I could go to Israel and keep my mouth shut so for now; probably not

“It was also my understanding that basically the United Nations pretty much just took the land from Palestine and gave it to Israel like 50 years ago. Yes?” Yes. That is true. In 1948 the United Nations approved the creation of the State of Israel on land already owned by the Palestinian people who had been living very nicely with the Jews before this. The problem isn’t even that as much as the indisputable fact that Israel has conducted a fifty year war of genocide and land theft against the Palestinian Arabs. They have cold-bloodedly slaughtered many thousands of people in their repeated acts of overkill. For killing ten Israelis; Israel kills dozens of women and children. Maiming and shattering the lives of innocent civilians instead of the actual perpetrators. Death and decay. That is Israel’s legacy.

“I saw in the news that Helen Thomas passed away this week. I was proud of her courage. We are supposed to have freedom of the press but a couple of unhappy comments I’ve heard from news anchors over the past couple years has made me think that the tone of what gets reported has to be in line with the politics of the station owners. And I’m not referring to cable news, but “mainstream” news.”

So true. And they are controlled by….? Helen was often portrayed as a racist because she spoke the truth about Israel. Anti-semetic they said. I don’t see how you can call her anti-semetic. She didn’t have anything against the rest of the semetic people of Palestine; just the Jews who are intent on killing the rest.

There is no excuse for Israel’s actions and there is nobody willing to stand up to them. the uS just keeps playing the same old time wasting game while Israel conti nues the killing and oppression.

Thx for taking the time for all those questions. 🙂 I typically remain optimistic about all things but sometimes it’s more difficult than others. I don’t think I’ll ever understand the level of cruelty — all through human history. Thanks much. -Dani -PS I see Israel & Palestine leaders are in Wash DC now. I choose to be optimistic about the talks, but at the same time, I won’t be placing any bets.

I agree. It’s just that the Palestinians were given a homeland but they have never been allowed to rule over it. I’m talking about Jordan, that is, where the vast majority of Jordanians are Palestinians but the ruling family are Saudis. So now the debate is over whether the Palestinians should get another homeland (the West Bank, that is). Isn’t politics beautiful?

A true masterpiece of biological manipulation and evil intent.
A tragic and ugly thing. Unfortunately it is what we must work with if we chose to attempt to effect change for the good. A real set-up to assure constant struggle and endless confusion on the part of the masses of humanity. To cement the wealthy and powerful in place as the manipulators.

I couldn’t agree more, however what ever became of the world leaders plan to give the Palestinians a homeland after World War I. It was called Transjordan (later Jordan) but was never given to the Palestinians even though they comprise the vast majority of Jordanians. So why don’t we now give the Palestinians Jordan and call it a day.

You are wrong, there is a lot of History dating back to when this used to be a country for the palestinians, I mean come one do you not have a brain, this was originally called Palestine, even a kid could tell you that. The real thing is, this land used to belong to Muslim Arabs, after the holocaust Britain decided to pick Palestine as a country where it can drop the jews and leave them for arabs to deal with.(makes no sense) so when arabs decided to protest in the public streets the jews went and attacked the palestinians personal homes and called it a check for terrorist ya sure , I call that an excuse to make it sound like they aren’t trying to be violent and instead protect their people from terrorists. But after some time Nothing happens. What I would like to know is that if Britain can go and save some jews from the holocaust, why can’t they go save syrians from the syrian conflict. I think that makes no sense. I didn’t read your whole long whatever this is called but I have to say with Fiery Passion I DISAGREE.

Well, it only matters what God says and He has already gave His decision on the subject, it is the center of all God has done. It will stay in the hands of it’s true people and that just is great. People just don’t want to accept that and that is too bad. His Son all his people will rule from Israel.

you got your facts from Wikipedia or what? oO, look at the hard facts and real history, not fabricated as you paste here. Internet is the source of fake news and false claims, but if you read the real hard cover books in history, from real factual sources that were traced and verified, you’ll find the truth, and the truth is that there were Philistines (Plishtim in hebrew) which were trying to stake a claim on the Judeah and Samariah lands while Israelits were there before after receiving that land from God, and then there’s the modern Palestinians which lie cheat and spread propaganda about their stake on the land of Israel, which they NEVER actually had. the so called Palestinians are a mixture of Jordan Egypt Sudan Lebanon and several other arab countries which settled in Israel, and decided to stake a claim over Israel. the Jews and Arabs that lived on the land that is now known as Israel, always lived in relative peace, jews were ruled by the catholic church for centuries in the land of Israel before Salah A-Din came and conquered the land back, only to later loose it to the English, whom later gave it to the Turks, whom in their turn eventually gave this land to the Jews to share after the holocaust, and the Jews offered to SHARE Israel land with the Arabs living there, to SHARE, unlike what you claim so vigorously with lies, saying Israel TOOK this land from them by force, Israel didn’t take anything from anybody, Israel offered to peacefully share this land the way they did for almost 2000 years.. and what did the Arabs do instead? they agreed to gather the might of the entire middle east, Iraq Egypt Lebanon Jordan Syria and others, and launched a full scale attack on Israel. outnumbered heavily by 12 to 1, with ten times more planes and 30 times more tanks, they still lost, Israel won, and a War is a War.. Israel offered to live in peace and all they got was unjust war, now the winning side dictates the rules, not vise versa, so you may whine and bitch about Israel controlling their homeland, but Israel is there to stay, and the sooner you accept these facts and go back to your ACTUAL homelands, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan… the sooner you’ll have your peace. but you don’t want peace, everybody knows that no matter how many lies and propaganda you spread, the truth about the arabs living in so called Palestine, is already out on the open and nobody believes Pallywood anymore.
