Reactionaries, the stick-in-the-mud dullards who accuse the Left of attitudess like “political correctness” – for example – are simply ignorant of the fact that PC politics originate with conservative doublespeak. It was Republicans in early days of Imperial America taking over from the Brits post-WW2 that decided upon a range of politically correct changes to mask a true characterization of our foreign and domestic policies.

So, the War Department became the Department of Defense. The pledge of allegiance added one nation under God while ordinary citizens were required to swear a loyalty oath in order to keep their jobs. One nation under God was added to our currency in 1957. Using religion to keep the already obedient in line and aiding the suppression of free thought wasn’t exactly a new tactic in the era of McCarthyism – but, it’s worked well enough that Tea Party ignoranuses now…
