It is clear to me after 55 years of observing the actions of the various governments that rule these United States that, rather than trying to make execution more humane; every effort has been made to make it more painful, lengthy, and cruel….
Beheading seems the fastest to me.
Of course; these methods only work well, when done correctly. (Kinda’ makes you shudder; huh?)
We have moved from Stoning to Hanging and to Electrocution, Gas Chambers, and finally Lethal Injection;
Not to mention being Skinned alive, Eaten by ravenous animals or insects, and being Drowned, Slow Oven Roasted, Boiled, Dried in the Sun, Impaled, Crucified, Crushed by weight.
In short there is almost no method of killing that has not been tried over the course of man’s history.
But as man moved farther from Nature and closer to each other, they began to acquire squeamishness about seeing their neighbors dissected before their eyes.
They now preferred that torture be done behind closed doors so that their delicate sensibilities were not offended.
Not that they were against torture; as long as they didn’t have to see it, but someone; some unknown goodie-two-shoes; suggested that such an attitude might be hypocritical. Some even asked what Jesus would think. (I say Jesus would think that nothing had changed since his time)
So more “Humane” methods were sought during the early part of the 20th century.
Now I don’t know what you think about anyone who could be an executioner or someone who plans, arranges, buys materials for or has anything to do with an execution. I couldn’t do it and I don’t know anyone who really could.
I think it takes a “Special” type of person to put a man to death. Not in Self-Defense or in anger but coldly by order of the court.
It seems to me that if you can do that job; you just might also enjoy the suffering of those about to die and those being killed. It’s the ideal job for a Sociopath and Sadist.
I’m sorry; I just don’t believe anyone else would do the job.
Having said this; you will forgive me if I suggest that instead of seeking more “Humane” methods; they in fact; were seeking ways to increase the torture while hiding it from the public.
The problem with each of the former execution methods was that while each was excruciatingly painful; it was difficult to prolong the torture without people seeing the convicts suffering.
Electrocution seemed good at first as the initial jolt made it virtually impossible for the prisoner to voice his agony but people catching on fire and other such occurrences made this seem somewhat unsavory for the public whose taste for torture was waning.
Gas seemed promising but Shucks; it turns out it takes a lot longer than we first said it did and even though strapped down to a chair; the prisoner can be seen writhing in agony and thrashing about.
Public Outcry! Damned Liberals even suggesting that “slow killin’ a bad guy is wrong”; “even if it don’t hurt too much”
What to do? Oh what to do?
And then; Lethal Injection arrived and we knew that “a truly Humane way had been found to:
“End the lives of them what needs endin’”.
Here is the thing.
I once watched a scientist give a rat; a poor, obviously worked over victim of repeated experimentation whom they deemed no longer worthy of life; an injection of Phenobarbital. A big one. The rat got sleepy; fell unconscious; and died. Quietly; with no pain.
That’s all it takes to kill a man by means of Lethal Injection. No three chemical cocktails; no drugs to hide the suffering.
Heroine would work. Any Opiate would work. Any number of options exist that almost completely negate the possibility of such “Botched” executions.
Lethal injection; as practiced in America today is just another and perhaps the most cruel of the weapons we have chosen to give to the small group of Sociopaths and controlled, “Pet” Serial Killers that society has entrusted with our prison system and our system of executions in particular.
How does Lethal Injection work?
The publicized plan was to give the prisoner a first drug. The Sedative. This would render him blissfully unconscious.
Then a third drug stops his heart.
Death ensues within seconds.
What if someone gives the second drug first? Then he is left suffocating for long minutes; completely conscious.
The worst part of this humane solution is that once a man can’t move; he can’t express his pain, terror, or anything else.
Once he is paralyzed; he could be left conscious and any chemical it pleases the executioner to pump into him; administered to produce the desired horror.
Author unknown; “There’s clearly cause for concern. The drug cocktail used in executions is supposed to paralyze the condemned and render him unconscious before death, but the Oklahoma case isn’t the only one to fall far short of this standard. In January, a condemned man in Ohio gasped and convulsed for 15 minutes while being put to death. Also in January, an Oklahoma convict’s last words after his lethal injection were, ‘I feel my whole body burning’.”
This is not a call for correct executorial procedure to insure humane treatment of the prisoner.
This is a call for the end of all executions to insure the humane treatment of ourselves and our society and take final judgment out of our hands.
