As a public relations strategy, Republicans often present the playing field as a choice between their free market capitalism, and the Democrats’ intrusive government socialism. Republicans’ trickle-down approach has the reputation of being a better driver of the economy. Democrats’ bottom up and middle out approach has the reputation of improving social conditions. But when examining real evidence, which economic policy direction has been better for the economy?
1) Unemployment Rates and Job Creation:
As the following graph shows, since Truman’s administration every Democratic presidential administration left office with a lower unemployment rate than when they came into office. But only one Republican Administration has accomplished this.
Since 1960 Republicans have controlled the White House 28 years and the Democrats 24. During those years, Democratic administrations have created 42 million jobs while Republican administrations created 24 million jobs, as shown in the graph below.
